Education Program Partnerships
Enriching the lives of our children through music education is important to the Reno Philharmonic Association (RPA) and we hope it is important to you, too. Each year more than 35,000 students are served through our music education programs.
“I feel alive with happiness.”
Marcos, a Celebrate Strings student on how it makes him feel to play violin
“I wish I could stay in that room forever your music enveloping me. The Hall of the Mountain King sounded ten times better in real life than on the c.d.”
Wally, after a Young People’s concert
Each of these children was changed after participating in a Reno Philharmonic Association (RPA) education program. The RPA offers four distinct programs to meet its mission and the goals of the Strategic Plan. In 2010, the Education Committee assessed in depth each of the four education programs and redefined goals, metrics, evaluation methodologies and analysis of program sustainability in alignment with the new Reno Philharmonic Strategic Plan. These are:
• Celebrate Strings – The RPA offers a free after-school strings program which targets underprivileged youth at three Title 1 At-Risk schools.
• Discover Music – This is an in-school education program of instrumental ensemble performances and hands-on instrument demonstrations in regional elementary schools. More than 13,000 children participate each year. Title 1 At-Risk schools are given preference.
• Youth Orchestras – The Philharmonic provides three youth orchestras that serve nearly 180 students. The Philharmonic employs a manager and two conductors to administer the program, which includes weekly rehearsals, coaching and concerts.
• Young People’s Concerts – The YPCs are performed for all third, fourth and fifth grade Washoe County students, as well as many private and home schooled elementary students in the Truckee Meadows area. Approximately 14,000 students attend the concerts each year at the Pioneer Center.
If you are considering support of one or more of these programs and helping to provide music education to the community’s children, please contact Jane Raley, Development Director or at 775-323-6393 extension 105.
