Reno Philharmonic begins 37th season
September 11, 2005
On Sunday, September 11th at 4:00pm and Tuesday, September 13th at 7:30pm, the Reno Philharmonic opens its 37th Season, with a concert of endearing and enduring music. Pianist Jean Philippe Collard returns to Reno to reprise his Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in c minor, first performed with the RPO in January 2002. The performance, held at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, will also feature Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, the “Organ” symphony.
Mr. Collard is a master of French concerto literature and his interpretations of Gershwin, Haydn, Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky have placed him in the highest tier of pianists today. Mr. Collard's discography includes the Rachmaninov Etudes-Tableaux and Brahms Hungarian Dances (with pianist Michel Beroff), both named Stereo Review's Record of the Year in their respective years; the Ravel Concerti with Lorin Maazel and the Orchestre National de France, cited by Gramophone Magazine as Best Concerto Recording; and the Chausson Concert, Op. 21 (with Augustin Dumay and the Muir String Quartet) which won the Grand Prix du Disque. He has recorded all five Saint-Saëns Piano Concerti with André Previn and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the first recordings of Mozart's arrangements of the six French melodies with baritone Jose van Dam. Other recordings include a disc of Chopin Ballades and the Sonata No. 3, and a Liszt recital disc including the B minor Sonata.
“The extreme lyrical beauty of the Second Concerto has made it one of Rachmaninoff¹s most endearing works, and indeed, one of the most popular piano concertos of this century, “ says Dr. Michael Fink of Program Notes, Inc. “Possibly the most striking feature of that lyricism is the inordinate length with which the composer draws out his themes. This is clear right from the beginning.” Mr. Collard's performance is underwritten by Doloris Darden Fegely and Helen Fegely Wessling in memory of Jack Fegely, a long time supporter of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and past board member.
The concert will end with Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, “Organ.” The piece generated the nickname for Camille Saint-Saëns of “French Beethoven,” given to him by one of his contemporaries after hearing the symphony for the first time. It is an unusual piece, as it uses only two movements and incorporates an organ in the final section of the work.
New subscriptions are on sale now for the complete season of six concerts. Prices start at $128 for the series of 6 concerts with discounts available to seniors. Student can apply for “rush” seating ½ hour before performance, must bring valid student ID, if over 16.
Patrons can join Music Director Barry Jekowsky one-half hour prior to each performance for “A Preview from the Podium”. This pre-concert talk is free for all ticket holders in the auditorium at the Pioneer Center. Mr. Jekowsky talks about the composers and/or works the orchestra will perform.
