Workshops for Musicians Technique, Auditioning, and Conducting
October 4, 2005
(Reno, Nev.) Emil de Cou, Associate Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), will lead a workshop on leading an orchestra that is open to all northern Nevada conductors on Friday, October 28, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The workshop is one over 14 workshops and clinics conducted by the musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra during their tour of northern Nevada October 27-28.

Local musicians can attend to learn from the country’s best musicians in areas of their own instrument. The workshops are free and open to all students, musicians, and conductors. Musicians will be selected under the guidance the workshop clinicians, members of the National Symphony Orchestra.

The public is invited to attend the clinics for free. “It’s an interesting way to see how a musician learns her craft,” said Scott Faulkner of the Reno Chamber Orchestra. “You can learn so much by watching, as well as gain a brand new perspective on how we work, learn, and create.”

The conducting workshop orchestra, held at Maytan Music, includes the conductors of the Carson City Symphony, David Bugli, and the Reno Pops Orchestra, conducted by Jane Brown. "This is an extraordinary opportunity for community musicians and conductors," said Tim Young, Executive Director of the Reno Philharmonic. "Emil de Cou is a dynamic conductor who has a wide range of experience with the National Symphony and other orchestras throughout the world."

The tour along with the workshops are funded by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts through a grant from the United States Department of Education, gives the Nevada symphonies like the RCO and RPA.

The National Symphony Orchestra, lead by Leonard Slatkin will be performing on Thursday evening. The proceeds will be split between the Reno Philharmonic Association and the Reno Chamber Orchestra to help advance their respective endowments and operating expenses, guaranteeing a secure future for the two orchestras. “This is an amazing opportunity to not only hear one of our nation’s treasures, but to support the two organizations providing classical music in Northern Nevada,” said Scott Faulkner of the Reno Chamber Orchestra. The NSO lead by Associate Conductor Emil de Cou will perform a shorter family show on Friday morning at 10 a.m.
