RPA and RCO Host the National Symphony Orchestra
Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to Hear the Nation’s Symphony
October 3, 2005
The National Symphony Orchestra chooses two states per year to visit. This happens to be Nevada’s lucky year. On October 27th, the NSO, lead by Leonard Slatkin, comes to Reno as part of a tour of the Silver State. A special family show will be performed on October 28th, by the NSO, lead by Associate Conductor, Emil De Cou. Both performances will be held at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

The tour, funded by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts through a grant from the United States Department of Education, gives the Nevada symphonies like the RCO and RPA, the opportunity to use the concert and appearance for fundraising and education purposes. The Thursday evening concert will be conducted by Mr. Slatkin and the proceeds will be split between the organizations to help advance their respective endowments and operating expenses, guaranteeing a secure future for the two orchestras. “This is an amazing opportunity to not only hear one of our nation’s treasures, but to support the two organizations providing classical music in Northern Nevada,” said Scott Faulkner of the Reno Chamber Orchestra.

The Friday family concert will be lead by Associate Conductor, Emil De Cou. The show’s theme, “Flying Around America” will contain musical selections representing each of the country’s regions. Ticket prices for the Friday family program start at $5.00. “This concert gives families in the region a chance to hear the orchestra, so we kept prices low to accommodate all,” said Tim Young of the Reno Philharmonic Association. “It compliments our education programs nicely,” he added.

Leonard Slatkin, known for this vast range of repertoire and crusader for music education, boasts highly lauded European, Asian, and US tours, numerous national broadcasts, and a White House celebration honoring the Orchestra and Mr. Slatkin for their advocacy of America's artistic heritage. Mr. Slatkin also boasts a Grammy for Best Classical Recording, awards for programming, the National Medal of the Arts, the nation's highest honor for a performing artist and 100 recordings recognized with five Grammy Awards and more than 50 other Grammy nominations.
