Reno Phil's 38th Season!
Many “Firsts,” New Music, New Guest Artists, New Instruments to the Pioneer Stage!
May 30, 2006
The beauty of the classical music genre is the depth of musical choices. This year, the Reno Philharmonic digs deep to find the hidden gems of the music to present for their upcoming 38th Season. The season line up, planned by Music Director Barry Jekowsky and the Artistic Affairs Committee of the Reno Philharmonic Association, includes many international artists bound for Reno, some very unusual artists, and a wide breadth of music. Guest artists include the return of pianist Horacio Gutierrez, Brazillian classical guitarists, the Assad Brothers, 14-year-old local harpist Jeremy Keppelmen, Peter and John Lenz, local cellists, pianist Rachel Kudo, and international violin sensation, Sarah Chang.

The season opens on September 10, with the Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad. The brothers are widely considered the most popular and virtuosic guitar duo in the world. Their virtuosity has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them: Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnatalli, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone. Now Sergio Assad is adding to their repertory by composing music for the duo and for various musical partners both with Symphony Orchestra and in recitals. The Grammy award winning artists have worked extensively with such renowned artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (whom performed with the RPO in 2005), Fernando Suarez Paz, Paquito D’Rivera, Gidon Kremer and Dawn Upshaw. They will be performing the Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto Madrigal for Two Guitars. Also on the program Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Weber, a piece that allows mini concerto solos for all the orchestra members and Zoltan Kodaly’s Hary Janos: Suite, a modern era symphony featuring a Chemblen, an ancient instrument.

Horacio Gutiérrez makes a return trip to Reno in October. In 2001, Mr. Gutiérrez performed Rachmaninoff’s fourth Piano Concerto in g minor on September 9th, but his second performance on September 11th was canceled. Considered among today’s foremost pianists, Horacio Gutiérrez is consistently praised by critics and audiences alike for the poetic insight and technical mastery he brings to a diverse repertoire. Since his professional debut in 1970 with Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mr. Gutierrez has appeared regularly with the world’s greatest orchestras and in major recital series. He will be performing the Serge Prokofiev’s- Concerto No. 3 for Piano, which will demonstrate his incredible talent. Also on the program for October 8 & 10, 2006 are Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, and probably one of the greatest symphonies ever written, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1

The November concert brings family together in time for Thanksgiving. Reno natives, brothers, and cellists, Peter and John Lenz will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos. Peter Lenz has been principal cello with the RPO since 1982. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mining Engineering, and is a Licensed Professional Engineer. John Lenz is a professor of music at the University of Nevada, where he teaches cello, horn, theory, and directs the orchestra. He currently serves as principal horn of the Reno Philharmonic, the Reno Chamber Orchestra, and the Great Basin Brass, and is the cellist (and horn when needed) of the Telluride Chamber Players, and the Argenta Ensemble. A resident of Reno since 1951, he received degrees from the University of Nevada and the New England Conservatory in Boston before joining the UNR faculty in 1972. His wife, Paula, and progeny, Ruth and Johnny, are also members of the Philharmonic. The concerts on November 19 & 21, 2006 will also feature Carl Nielsen’s exotic and thrilling Aladdin Suite and Beethoven’s intimate Symphony No. 6.

The January concerts, on 14 & 16, 2007, are set to celebrate the MLK weekend with Scherzo from Afro-American Symphony, a piece written by the first African American composer to write for orchestra, William Grant Still. Pianist Rachel Kudo joins the orchestra for these concerts. Ms. Kudo was the only American finalist in the Chopin Piano Competition in Poland. She has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, was a silver medalist in the 2003 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and currently attends Julliard. She will perform Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the concerto. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, on the 100th Anniversary of Shostakovich’s birth rounds out this celebratory concert.

For MasterClassics 5, on March 4 & 6, 2007, Reno welcomes Violinist Sarah Chang to the stage. Recognized the world over as one of classical music’s most captivating and gifted performers, and one of the most remarkable prodigies of any generation, she has matured into a young artist whose musical insight, technical virtuosity, and emotional range continue to astonish. This past season, Ms. Chang appeared with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the symphonies of San Francisco, Nashville, Grand Rapids, Virginia, Montreal, Seattle, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh. Ms. Chang began her violin studies at age 4 and promptly enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with the late Dorothy DeLay. Her early auditions, at age 8, led to immediate engagements with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Along with Pete Sampras and Wynton Marsalis, she is a featured artist in Movado’s global advertising campaign “The Art of Time.” In June 2004, Ms. Chang became the youngest person ever to receive the Hollywood Bowl's Hall of Fame award. She is a past recipient of the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, and Gramophone’s “Young Artist of the Year” award. The remarkable accomplishments of her career were recognized in 1999 when she received the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards given to instrumentalists. She will be performing Jean Sibelius’ Concerto for Violin. Also on the program are Bedrich Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride, a Reno Philharmonic premiere and Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Scottish” symphony.

For the season finale, on April 1 & April 3, 2007, a wildly diverse program will be presented. Duke Ellington’s Suite from The River, a truly American piece with Jazz influences and will be performed as well as Hector Berlioz’s over the top Symphonie Fantastique. Guest artist harpist Jeremy Keppelman, will perform George Friderick Handel’s Concerto for Harp. Fourteen-year-old Jeremy Keppelmann is in the 9th grade at Sage Ridge Ridge School, and studies harp with Linda Rollo of Saratoga California. In February 2005, Jeremy performed his own composition, Spaghetti Rag, on PAX TV (now I TV) show, America's Most Talented Kids. In 2005, Jeremy was one of 25 young harpists from around the world invited to perform at the World Harp Congress in Dublin, Ireland. He also finished in 3rd place in the junior division of the Liley-Laskine International Harp Competition in Deauville, France. Besides his talent for music Jeremy also loves acting and the visual arts. In May of 2006, he had the lead role of “Edward Middleton” in the Sage Ridge musical production of the Drunkard.
