RENO PHILHARMONIC BEGINS 38TH SEASON
Brazilian Guitarists, Ancient Instruments, and Wine
On Sunday, September 10th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 12th at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic opens its 38th Season, with a concert of enchanting and exotic music, sponsored by the Reno Gazette-Journal and the Reno Philharmonic Endowment Trust. The season opens on September 10, with the Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad, performing Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto Madrigal for Two Guitars. Also on the program is Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Weber and Zoltán Kodály’s Háry János: Suite.

The Assad brothers are widely considered the most popular and virtuosic guitar duo in the world. Their virtuosity has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them: Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnatalli, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone. Sergio Assad is now adding to their repertory by composing music for the duo and for various musical partners both with Symphony Orchestra and in recitals. The Grammy award-winning artists have worked extensively with such renowned artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (whom performed with the RPO in 2005), Fernando Suarez Paz, Paquito D’Rivera, Gidon Kremer and Dawn Upshaw.

“It’s exciting to follow up last season’s performance with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg with the Serio and Odair,” said Barry Jekowsky, music director of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. “They are magical to behold. The CD they created with Nadja is breathtaking.”

Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Weber is a piece written in the early 1940’s for a ballet with Léonide Massine using Salvador Dali sets and costumes. After hearing the music, Massine dropped the ballet project indicating that the music Hindemith proposed was “too personal.” According to musicologist Susan Halpern, Hindemith re-wrote the music into the Suite. “In the end, three years later, he turned it into the Symphonic Metamorphosis, which became one of his most popular compositions,” she added.

Zoltán Kodály’s Háry János: Suite is a modern era symphony featuring a cimbalom, an ancient instrument new to Reno Phil audiences. Kodaly is a contemporary of Béla Bartók, and the two worked together cataloging and studying Hungarian Folk music, which became a major influence in their writing.

The Reno Philharmonic Association is kicking off the season a day early on September 9th, as a part of the Wine Walk. Celebrating 25 years of the Great Reno Balloon Races, the Wine Walk will feature guitarists from the Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Society along the route. The cost is $15.00 and it includes, wine, map, and commemorative wine glass. The Reno Philharmonic will be a stop on the walk at the Pioneer Center Plaza with food, wine, music, and Kalin & Jinger of the Magic Underground. The Wine Walk runs from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
