Horacio Gutiérrez Returns to Reno to Play with Philharmonic
First Performed with Phil on 9/8/01 and Second performance on 9/11/01 was canceled
September 25, 2006
On Sunday, October 8th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 10th at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic sees a return trip of a world renowned pianist, Horacio Gutiérrez in a performance with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra with a concert of favorite music, sponsored by the Reno Philharmonic Guild. Also on the program are Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 1.

Horacio Gutiérrez makes a return trip to Reno in October. In 2001, Mr. Gutiérrez performed Rachmaninoff’s fourth Piano Concerto in g minor on September 9th, but his second performance on September 11th was canceled. Considered among today’s foremost pianists, Horacio Gutiérrez is consistently praised by critics and audiences alike for the poetic insight and technical mastery he brings to a diverse repertoire. Since his professional debut in 1970 with Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mr. Gutierrez has appeared regularly with the world’s greatest orchestras and in major recital series. He will be performing Serge Prokofiev’s dazzling Concerto No. 3 for Piano. The work is sponsored by James and Norma Morrison.

“Half of our audience missed out on hearing the best pianist in the world when we canceled the second concert in 2001,” said Barry Jekowsky, music director of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. “I’ve been trying to arrange for him to return ever since.”

Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, is a piece everyone in the audience will immediately recognize as it has been used in as a patriotic theme for many years. The piece was commissioned by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1942 to promote feelings of patriotism and national unity during World War 2. The work is sponsored by the Brian and Nancy Kennedy Foundation.

Considered by many to be probably one of the greatest symphonies ever written, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 will round out the program. After its debut, the symphony was nicknamed, “Beethoven’s Tenth,” due to the similar themes in its first movement.

The performance schedule is:

The Reno Philharmonic Guild sponsors this concert. The Guild's fundraising, mostly through Pops on the River, which will net over $60,000 this year, makes them one of the top funders of the Phil. They chose to sponsor this concert because of the caliber of Mr. Gutiérrez’s performance.
