Barry Jekowsky Steps Down From the RPO Center Stage
Leaves a Legacy of Successful Education Programs, Brilliant Music and Significant Growth
November 15, 2006
The Reno Philharmonic and Music Director Barry Jekowsky have announced that Jekowsky will leave the RPA following the 2007-08 Philharmonic season. “I made a commitment to Reno and after 10 seasons I am very proud of my legacy. I am so pleased with the progress of this orchestra, especially our successes in the education programs and in the concert hall.”

Jekowsky joined the Reno Philharmonic as the Orchestra’s Music Director/Conductor in 1998. His first performance with the Reno Philharmonic was on September 15, 1998 followed by nine seasons. The 2007-08 season, his tenth with the orchestra, will celebrate his accomplishments in Reno.

Music Director Barry Jekowsky and RPA successes:
• 1999 added the Reno Philharmonic Youth Chamber Orchestra, renamed in 2005, the Concert Orchestra
• 1999 added the Sunday Concert Performance, creating concert pairs
• Yearly ticket sales growth at between 5-24%, well above national averages for orchestra ticket sales
• The budget for the organization grew from $900K to $1.7 million
• Established and strengthened the Philharmonic's presence and support in the Lake Tahoe region
• Created the unique holiday concerts, which due to popular demand, doubled its performances in only 3 years
• With his innovative approach to programming, and his strong support of American music and our Western culture, Mr. Jekowsky sparked the idea of a collaboration between the Reno Philharmonic and the Reno Rodeo Association giving birth to "Rhythm and Rawhide,” the RPA’s most successful fundraiser

RPA Board and orchestra members stress the contribution that Barry has brought to the Reno Philharmonic. “We are extremely grateful to Barry for the time that he has given us in these past nine seasons. Barry’s influence on the musicians will be heard for years to come,” said Fred Hamilton, Board of Trustees President. “Barry is always prepared and committed to the music” commented horn player and Player committee chair Peter Adlish. “He makes the concerts exciting and makes our job that much more enjoyable also.”

The 2007-08 RPA season will celebrate Jekowsky’s work with the orchestra. Tim Young, Executive Director said “We will be offering a very exciting season, with all the elements that we have come to expect from the Philharmonic conducted by Barry Jekowsky.”

During the 2008-09, 40th Anniversary season, the Reno Philharmonic’s next Music Director will be selected by the artistic affairs committee made of volunteers on the RPA board, musicians from the orchestra, and leaders in the artistic community. “That will be an exciting time for the RPA” said Young. “Following Barry’s tenure the bar will have been set very high.”
