Reno Phil Performs Free for Silver Legacy Crowd
July 10, 2007
Reno, Nevada (July 6, 2007) - Silver Legacy Resort Casino is celebrating its twelfth birthday on July 20th at 8 p.m. and invites both locals and visitors to enjoy a free outdoor concert and award-winning fireworks show featuring the music of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. The annual event takes place in front of Silver Legacy at Fourth and Virginia Streets. As the music of the Reno Philharmonic fills the air throughout Downtown Reno, the skies will light up with a brilliant fireworks display shot from the resort’s rooftop as a concert finale. Guests are welcome to bring blankets and picnic dinners.
As part of the concert, the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform “Fantasy Concerto for Four Prepared Slot Machines, Orchestra, and Chorus on Leroy Anderson.” The piece, arranged and composed by Music Director Barry Jekowsky, will be played with actual slot machines prepared by IGT for the concert. The piece was set to be performed at the 2006 Silver Legacy Concert, but was rained out.
“I’ve always been fascinated by these machines,” said Barry Jekowsky, music director of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. “My interest in the pairing of unusual instruments with a symphony orchestra led me to write this piece.” The “Fantasy Concerto” features soloists Bill Hecht and Robert Lightfoot, musicians with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and employees of IGT. The collaboration between Jekowsky and the slot machine manufacturer was developed as the music director detailed his vision to the designers and programmers and realized the enormous musical capacity of the slot machines. The machines were prepared specifically for the premiere of this piece of music.
The orchestra, made up of over 60 talented musicians, performs under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Barry Jekowsky in Reno and in various outdoor and indoor venues throughout northern Nevada and California. The popular MasterClassics Series is performed on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings between September and April at the Pioneer Center in downtown Reno. The orchestra also presents over 10 specialty performances, like the holiday classic, Spirit of the Season, Rhythm and Rawhide, Fourth of July in Genoa, Broadway on the Beach at Sand Harbor, and the perennially sold out, Pops on the River.
