Young and talented pianist joins the Phil for October Concert
October 1, 2007
On Sunday, October 21st at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 23rd at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic will feature a line up of romantic period and western themed music with the highlight of a young and talented pianist, Andrew Von Oeyon, performing Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Also on the program are the Overture to the opera William Tell, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9.

Andrew von Oeyen has already established himself as one of the most captivating pianists of his generation. Since his debut at age 17 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen, von Oeyen has performed to critical acclaim in recital and orchestral appearances around the world. Recent concert highlights include Mr. von Oeyen`s return to London’s Wigmore Hall, after his successful 2004 recital debut there. He also returned to the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, where he won the prestigious Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1999, to the Spoleto Festival where he played and conducted to great acclaim, and to the Detroit Symphony for a subscription week. He has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, Singapore Symphony, and at the Grant Park Festival. A recent graduate of The Juilliard School, Mr. von Oeyen`s performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and he has been a featured guest on NPR’s “Performance Today.”

Included in this program is the Overture to the opera William Tell, most commonly known as the theme to the famed TV show, Lone Ranger. “The audience will nearly not recognize this piece, since we’re doing the complete overture,” said Tim Young, executive director of the Reno Philharmonic Association. “The overture opens with music that is not usually performed,” he added.
Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, also called the “New World” rounds out the program. This romantic period symphony Mr. Jekowsky chose for his debut season with the Reno Phil, in 1998.
