Seniors participate in Conductorcise class

Orchestra conductors get more exercise than one might think, and their routine is catching on with the public, particularly senior citizens.

The "down, across, out, up" or "floor, window, wall, ceiling" move and the circular 1-2-3 motions are among several aerobic routines done to music in Conductorcise classes.

"If you get mixed up, who cares? Have fun," Joel Munc, conductor of the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, told students trying out the class on Friday at Classic Residence by Hyatt.

Munc said he's been a conductor for five years, but this was the first exercise class he's taught.

"They contacted the Philharmonic, and I got a call and I thought, 'What a great idea,'" said Munc, 30.

The workout

The workout is based on a musical conductor's moves and can be done while seated or standing. Many seniors, such as Richard Sidwell, opted to do a bit of both.

"I felt I got a workout," said Sidwell, 93. "I like that kind of exercise. It's a variation from walking outdoors."

Staff at the retirement community focus on a different aspect of health each month, and physical health was the focus during August, lifestyle coordinator Emily Hammer said.

David Dworkin, a 73-year-old New Yorker who has conducted orchestras nationwide, launched the program earlier this year.

Conductorcise claims to increase endurance and upper body strength and stimulate brain coordination through bilateral movement.

Rosemary Gunderson, 87, said the class was fun.

"With music, it makes you feel much more alive," Gunderson said. "I don't know too much about music, but I enjoy it so much that this along with exercise makes it so much greater."

Bill Kirkham, 89, said he liked moving fast to the music.

"I like to do this by myself, and this is the first time I've had an instructor," Kirkham said. "I didn't know what to expect, but it was wonderful."

Classic Residence by Hyatt is scheduled to hold conductorcise classes at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, Hammer said.

Although the class is full, she said another one might be scheduled if the demand is there. For sign-up information, call Hammer at 829-6314.
