Reno Philharmonic Orchestra Opens 39th Season
September 10, 2007
On Sunday, September 30th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 2nd at 7:30.p.m. the Reno Philharmonic will open it’s 39th season, with a concert that encompasses this year’s “Best Of” Barry Jekowsky theme. The concert, sponsored by IGT, will feature cellist Alisa Weilerstein and violinist Axel Strauss, performing Brahms’ Double Concerto for Cello and Violin. Also on the program are the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No.2.
Cellist Alisa Weilerstein will be returning for a third time to perform with the Reno Philharmonic; her appearances were in October 1999 and November 2004. Since her first public concert at the age of 4, Ms. Weilerstein has performed with the nation's top orchestras, given recitals in music capitals throughout the U.S. and Europe, and regularly participates in prestigious international festivals. She is also dedicated to performing chamber music, having grown up in a family of musicians with whom she collaborated from an early age. Following a performance of Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote, "Cellists twice or thrice Weilerstein's age would be hard-pressed to match the concentrated beauty and power of this young dynamo's playing."
Also on the program is a piece from Barry Jekowsky’s beloved Leonard Bernstein, teacher, and mentor to the Reno Phil conductor. He’s bringing back the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, which was performed in the 2002-03 season. Music Director and Conductor Barry Jekowsky studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein in New York City.
Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No.2, a vivid and exciting piece new to the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra audience rounds out the concert.
