The Reno Phil Begins the New Year with Fire…and Grace
A Concert as Unique as the Orchestra Members
January 1, 2008
The January concerts, on Sunday the 13th and Tuesday the 15th, are set to get the audience in a dancing mood. As the orchestra will perform Manual de Falla’s Dances from the 3-Cornered Hat, they will share the stage with celebrated flamenco dancer, Yaelisa. Also on the program is Giuliani’s Guitar Concerto No. 3, featuring guitarist and Davidson Fellow Travis Johnson, in his professional debut. Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s romantic Symphony No. 5 completes this diverse and exciting program.

According to musicologist, Dr. Susan Halpern, “Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s enchanting score [of the Three-Cornered Hat] is rich in allusion to the folk music of several regions of Spain. There are many authentic national dances, and many of the tunes are popular songs familiar to almost every Spaniard.” The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra performed the full ballet in 2000, under music director Barry Jekowsky’s baton with a Flamenco Dance Company from Concord, California. Sharing the stage for the Dances from the Three-Cornered Hat, will be the award winning Flamenco dancer, Yaelisa, the Artistic Director of Caminos Flamencos. The Los Angeles Times has called her a "luminary" among flamenco dancers for her extraordinary rhythmic ability, which radiates nothing less than pure emotion infused with sensuality. Raised by her Spanish mother, also a Flamenco performer, Yaelisa was surrounded from birth by the rhythms, gestures and vocal laments of the art in its purest form. Her artistic training has come from many of the great Spanish masters, including Ciro, Manolo Marin, Jose Galvan and El Guito. She has toured as a guest artist in festivals and concerts in Spain, Japan, Mexico, the Middle East and throughout the United States. Her performance is sponsored by the Sierra Philharmonic League.

Traditionally, the Reno Philharmonic hosts a guest artist each season from the pool of Davidson Fellows. Guitarist Travis Johnson, a winner of a $10,000 scholarship from the local institute, will join the orchestra for Mauro Giuliani Guitar Concerto No. 3. The piece, written around 1816, balances the large sound of the orchestra with the smaller music produced by the guitar. Mr. Johnson was awarded first prize at the Guitar Foundation of America’s First Youth Solo Guitar Competition and has performed with the Portland Guitar Society. Travis began his studies on guitar at the age of eight. Travis was selected as a Davidson Fellow, became a semi-finalist in the Parkening International Guitar Competition, and premiered his composition, Boppin’, on the national classical radio program “From the Top.” His performance is sponsored by the Davidson Institute for Talent Development.

Lastly on the program is the very popular Symphony No. 6 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The symphony, written 1888, is considered one of the most original examples of the Romantic symphonic form and is frequently performed.
