Reno Phil Hosts Incredible Piano Talent for “Brilliant Echoes”
January 16, 2008
For the fifth concert in the MasterClassics series, on Sunday February 24th at 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 26th at 7:30 p.m., Reno welcomes back Van Cliburn winner, Jon Nakamatsu. The concerts, sponsored by the Reno Gazette-Journal, will also feature Beethoven’s exciting Lenore No. 3 and the evocative Pines of Rome from Respighi.
A native of California, Jon Nakamatsu claimed a distinguished place on the international musical scene in June 1997 when named the Gold Medalist of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the only American to have achieved this distinction since 1981. A former high school German teacher, he became a star in classical music overnight. When Mr. Nakamatsu performed in Reno in 2004, Jack Neal wrote, “He brings a sensational technique to the concerto's extensive demands, but never lapses into mere keyboard athletics. His playing does dazzle, however. It also touches the heart and that's exactly as it should be.” He will perform Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3, a piece he has recorded with the Rochester Philharmonic.
Named Debut Artist of the Year (1998) by NPR's "Performance Today," Jon Nakamatsu has been profiled by "CBS Sunday Morning" and Reader's Digest magazine, and is featured in "Playing with Fire," a documentary about the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, aired nationwide on PBS. Earlier, in 1995, he was named the First Prize winner of Miami's Fifth United States Chopin Piano Competition. Mr. Nakamatsu records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi USA, which has released four CDs, the most recent of which contains performances of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, with Christopher Seaman and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Reno Phil last performed the unique Lenore No. 3 in October 1982 with conductor Ron Daniels. The piece was written by Ludwig von Beethoven, as part of an opera that was never quite finished or debuted. The third section of the opera was considered one of Beethoven’s finest works outside his symphonies and is performed frequently on its own.
Otto Respighi’s Pines of Rome is the second composition in a trilogy of works about Rome. One of orchestral music’s most beloved pieces, it is a tone poem based on the trees, fountains and festivals of the great Italian city.
Also a part of the weekend’s festivities is a master class held on Saturday 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Steinway store on Moana Lane. In a master class, students and spectators watch and listen as the master or teacher teaches one student at a time. The value of the master class setup is that all students can benefit from the master's comments on each piece, and it is considered to be one of the most effective means of musical development, along with competitions, examinations, and practice. The general public is invited to come to the class and learn more about the cello and how it is played.
