About the Youth Orchestras
The mission of the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (RPYO) is to provide
an exceptional orchestral experience where students learn, share and enjoy
the performance of music to the benefit of the community.
The Reno Philharmonic Association boasts two youth orchestras:
The Youth Concert Orchestra (YCO) is an ensemble geared toward developing
the musicianship of less experienced players by exposing them to fine music
of many styles and periods. With an emphasis on training less experienced
strings, winds, brass, and percussion players, the YCO performs music
accessible to the student who has had a limited exposure to symphonic
playing. YCO programs encompass a wide range of style periods. The YCO
provides the developing musician with a well-balanced symphonic experience.
The YCO is conducted by Mr. Jose Flores.
The Youth Symphony Orchestra (YSO) is a fine orchestra with full woodwind,
brass, percussion, and string sections. Composed of more advanced students
who are seeking an additional challenge, the YSO performs professional
symphonic repertoire from the Classical through Contemporary periods. In
addition to its public concerts each semester, the YSO performs a series of
Young People's Concerts in November for fourth grade students in northern
Nevada. Students from the YSO often go on to perform with the Reno
Philharmonic and other professional orchestras. The YSO is conducted by Mr.
Joel Munc.
