Concerto Competition Winners

On Saturday January 18 at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Reno, 28 young musicians vied for the chance to play their concerto with the top youth orchestra in northern Nevada, our own Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jason Altieri. The competition attracted a record number of entries and lasted nearly seven hours. The following division winners were chosen:
Ethan Chen, piano
Nathan Barnes, piano
John Humphreys, bass trombone
Aden Aiazzi-Palmer, violin
Oliver Leitner, violin

Two Grand Prize winners will perform their concerto with the Youth Symphony Orchestra in upcoming concerts. Oliver Leitner, a high school freshman and second time grand prize winner, will perform the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto at all YSO Spring 2015 concerts. Nathan Barnes, piano, impressed the judges with his energetic, nuanced interpretation of Beethoven’s Concerto in C minor and will perform with the Youth Symphony in Fall 2015 both at Renown as part of the Healing Arts Series and on the E. L. Wiegand Grand Piano in the Pioneer Center.
