John Denver’s Greatest Hits

Singer-songwriter John Denver took you down Country Roads and to a Rocky Mountain High with a run of signature hits that made him the most beloved country-folk musician of his time. Following his untimely death, singer Jim Curry has kept his memory alive and joins the Reno Phil Orchestra under the stars at Lake Tahoe for a one night only performance of Denver’s greatest hits. From Sunshine On My Shoulders to Thank God I’m a Country Boy to Leaving On a Jet Plane, this concert will take you back to a time of simple country pleasures and heartfelt tunes.

The violin is front-and-center as we take the audience on a journey through famous legends with this season opening concert. Violinist Niccoli Paganani was often accused of selling his soul to the devil for his prodigious talents, though he claims a guardian angel was responsible for his virtuosic playing. Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff for piano and orchestra is 24 variations on a famous and challenging violin solo.

The Organ Symphony

The Reno Phil’s Principal Trombonist, Jim Albrecht, will be the featured soloist for Appermont’s Colors for Trombone, a creative and imaginative piece that explores the wide color palette of the solo trombone. The program will conclude with a side-by-side performance featuring the Reno Phil Orchestra and Reno Phil Youth Symphony Orchestra playing Saint-Saëns’ most popular symphony.

Arrangements of orchestral favorites are available for players of all levels. The afternoon will include rehearsals, sectionals, and a concert.
