All young people in northern Nevada and northern California, including RPYO members, may choose to participate in the Reno Philharmonic’s annual Piano Concerto Competition. The 2013 Competition was held on April 27, 2013. Congratulations to our 2013 Grand Prize Winner Jacob Warnick. Applications for the 2014 Competition will be available in January 2014.

ELIGIBILITY
All elementary, middle and high school students from the following counties:

Nevada: Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey, Washoe, White Pine

California: Eldorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra

A. Time limit is 15 minutes for both the competition and the performance with orchestra. Multiple movements are acceptable and cuts are at the discretion of teacher and student. Please perform the music exactly as you would expect to when accompanied by the orchestra.

B. 2014 applicants must choose from the following pre-selected pieces:

J.S. Bach: Keyboard Concerto No.1 in D minor, BWV 1052

J.S. Bach: Keyboard Concerto No.2 in E major, BWV 1053

Haydn:  Keyboard Concerto No.11 in D major

Mozart: Concerto No.9 in E flat major, K.271

Concerto No. 12 in A major, K.414

Concerto No.17 in G major, K.453

Concerto No.21 in C major, K.467

Concerto No.23 in A major, K.488

Mendelssohn:  Piano Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op.25

Grieg:  Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.16

C. Deadlines are in place so that we do not inconvenience our accompanists and judges.

Please plan ahead, talk to your private teacher, and respect deadlines for applications.

D.  Students must provide their own piano accompanist.

E. The Grand Prize winner has the opportunity to play his or her piece with the YSO at the following season’s RPYO Fall Concert at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.  The winning concerto must be the piece performed with the YSO.

The results of the competition will be chosen and announced at the end of the competition.
